St. Helens Riverwalk
The St. Helens Riverwalk represents a transformative urban design project that reclaims a former industrial waterfront on the Columbia River, converting it into a high-performance public asset. Spanning approximately a half-mile, the corridor establishes a critical link between the city’s historic Riverfront District and the Nob Hill Nature Park, providing public access to land previously inaccessible for decades.
The design strategy prioritizes environmental restoration and human connectivity through a "porous" shoreline approach. The layout integrates meandering pathways, boardwalks, and strategic overlooks that facilitate community engagement with the river while simultaneously enhancing riparian and shallow-water habitats.
Phase 1, completed in June 2025, focused on the revitalization of Columbia View Park. This phase delivered 300 feet of dedicated riverwalk, a new multi-purpose amphitheater stage, and technical infrastructure including bioengineered retaining walls and sustainable lighting systems. Future phases are programmed to include a "Rocky Beach" for direct water access and a southern "Recreation Hub" featuring a non-motorized boat launch. By balancing the site’s industrial heritage with modern ecological stewardship, the Riverwalk serves as a resilient promenade that anchors St. Helens' broader 24-acre riverfront redevelopment.
