Washington State School for the Blind
The Washington State School for the Blind project provides spaces for the Learning Independence for Today and Tomorrow (LIFTT) and the Department of Services for the Blind (DSB). The LIFTT program is a transitional program for the blind and low vision community that have graduated high school but still needs training to live on their own. The DSB provides services for blind and low vision citizens statewide. The site utilizes high-contrast paving, tactile surfaces, and a diverse palette of aromatic and textured vegetation to provide consistent environmental cues. The team worked with well known blind architect Chris Downey to understand the unique needs of this user group and gave guidance on how to present site designs for their review.
